Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology Dr. Cihat Ünlü explained that closed-loop robotic technique improves patients' quality of life in surgical treatment of ovarian cysts.
Is it possible to prevent ovarian cysts?
It is not in question to completely prevent ovarian cysts, one of the most common gynecological problems in women. Most of these occur in parallel with the monthly changes in the hormones and are generally benign cysts that disappear spontaneously. However, the ovaries have many different good and malignant cystic tumors. The most important method of diagnosis is to have patients perform gynecological examinations and pelvic ultrasound regularly once or twice every year. Treatment with cysts early diagnosis may be possible.
How is ovarian masses diagnosed?
Apart from gynecologic examination and ultrasonography, the most important laboratory tests for diagnosis are some biomarkers which are considered to be calm. We call these tumor markers in medicine. By combining all these methods, we can understand whether a woman's cystic structure is benign or malignant and can be treated with surgery or medication.
Could you tell me about the treatment?
We can examine the treatment of ovarian cysts under two main headings. In a group of patients, it is possible to remove the cysts with medical treatment, ie various medications. The most commonly used drugs in this area are birth control pills and some hormonal drugs. Usually 3-6 months of treatment is sufficient for treatment. However, surgical intervention is needed for those with a diameter of 5 cm or greater, malignant tumors and cancers.
Nowadays almost all of these cysts are treated with laparoscopic approach, ie closed surgery. In this method, without making a large incision in the carcass, we can open a small hole with a diameter of 0.5 cm from a few points, send a camera in, and perform the operation from the outside in the image coexistence. Since the abdomen is not open, the patient heals more quickly and is not a cosmetic scar. Since there is no intraabdominal adhesions due to open surgery, the fertility of the patient is not affected negatively from this operation.
The latest technology that has been achieved in this regard is the use of robots to perform closed surgeries. Robotic surgery Besides the advantages of the laparoscopic surgeon, the 360 degree mobility also makes it possible to remove difficult structures that are difficult to reach.
